The invention in 1840 of oil paints in metal tubes allowed artists to work outdoors. Before this invention the artists had to draw, sketch studies from nature so at the end they would complete their art piece at their studios. The paintings could be done quickly often in one session allowing them to focus in the experience they were perceiving at the moment.
